Why CompTIA?

If your son or daughter is interested in pursuing an IT career, understand what it takes and how CompTIA qualifications can benefit their career choice.

Here are some answers to common questions asked by parents about CompTIA certifications. In addition, we’ve added some helpful tips as you talk and guide your child in their career choice.

How can certification benefit my child?

With technology changing all the time, there’s never a shortage of new things to learn in IT. By validating what your son or daughter knows through certification, he or she will be in demand to employers looking to recruit people with their skills.

By adding a certification to his or her existing CV, your child increases his or her career opportunities.

Salaries in the IT field are attractive. Eight in 10 employers reward or recognise their staff after passing a certification exam with an increase in salary or pay, public recognition, bonus or promotion.

Is getting certified expensive and is it worth the cost?

Yes, there are costs associated with both preparing for certification and taking the exams.  Depending on the type of learning chosen, the cost can vary. Taking a class is the most costly but face-to-face interaction has its benefits. Self-paced learning or virtual classrooms are more convenient and less costly but are not ideal for those who are better suited to traditional learning environments. Students can research their options and choose a training solution that suits their learning style.

Both the cost for the exam and the preparation expenses are well worth the cost in the end. Validating one’s credentials can significantly impact whether or not one gets a job as well as the salary received.

Tip: Keep talking to your child about his or her career interests.

Even if you think they aren’t listening, 68% of students we surveyed name their parents
as the No. 1 person they rely on
when they discuss jobs and careers.

Tip: Be sure your child strengthens their soft skills.

Maths and science aren’t the only skills needed for IT. Twenty-seven percent of teens surveyed say a parent or grandparent told them they aren’t good at maths or science. The reality is that soft skills are just as important as hard skills when it comes to having an IT career. Help desk support is just one area where communication and listening skills can contribute to success in the role.

Tip: Bring your child to work.

If you or someone you know is involved in IT, have your son or daughter tag along so they can learn more about the industry first-hand. Forty percent of teens we surveyed expressed that they would like to go to work for a day or a week with mentors. It’s a great learning experience!

They train

They get certified

After proper preparation, encourage your child to validate his or her skills through certification. Don’t let cold feet stand in the way. If their school or training centre doesn’t offer testing, they can purchase and schedule their test through Pearson VUE. With thousands of testing centres located around the world, finding one that’s convenient should be easy.

They get the job!

Once your child becomes CompTIA certified, make sure he or she proudly displays those credentials on his or her resume. Employers actively seek individuals who can validate their skills and knowledge. This is a key advantage in getting an interview and one step closer to landing that dream job.
